I’m a Canadian ecologist and conservation biologist with more than 20 years of research on seabirds, marine plastic pollution, and the environmental health of remote oceanic islands. I’m Principal Curator and Curator in Charge of the Bird Group at the Natural History Museum in London, co-lead of Adrift Lab, and the former Editor-in-Chief of Avian Conservation & Ecology. My fieldwork has taken me across Canada, Alaska, Australia, the South Atlantic, and the South Pacific; my research has been published in more than 200 peer-reviewed papers.
I also write about birds for audiences from five-year-olds to fellow scientists, and I draw on 20 years as a stage actor and improvisor to deliver workshops on science communication and LGBTQ+ inclusion in STEM.
If you’re looking for expert input on a project — research, writing, or communication — you’re in the right place.
Scientific Consultancy
Expert consultancy on plastic pollution and wildlife, seabird biology and ecology, community-based and Indigenous-led research, and environmental monitoring programme design. I work with government agencies, Indigenous governments, NGOs, and research consortia — particularly in northern and coastal Canada, the UK Overseas Territories, and the South Pacific.
Writing & Consultancy
I write and consult on bird and natural history content for publishers, authors, and educators — from peer-reviewed academic texts to children’s books. Published work includes Birds: A Day in the Life (Neon Squid/Macmillan) and contributions to major illustrated titles from Phaidon Press and Nosy Crow. Services include original writing, manuscript editing, and expert fact-checking.
Speaking & Communication
Workshops and talks that draw on principles from improvisational theatre to help scientists communicate with clarity, confidence, and purpose — for any audience. I also deliver Hidden Diversity in Science: Queer in STEM, a seminar on LGBTQ+ inclusion in scientific careers, for academic departments and corporate organisations.
